I stumbled across this site and thought it had to be posted because, this is truly one of those "no place but Texas" kind of moments and its just more proof that things really are bigger in Texas sometimes.

Good Stuff tweeted from Texas

Sunday, September 20

Just wanted to share a few tweets passed on by others that didn’t make the front page news but should have:

Tweet from the TXRollergirls -Austin's All Women's Flat Track Roller Derby League- Ranked #5 in the US :

  • TXRollergirls : Austin Derby Brats made the Austin Chronicle's "Best of" list. Next scrimmage Oct. 8. http://is.gd/3szMp “  be sure and check out the link, the Austin Derby Brats are the “peewee league” in Austin’s roller derby world.

Two tweets from Texas Grand - www.Texas-Best.com All the best people, places and things in Texas :

  • TexasGrand : The new Cowboy Stadium opens today for its first regular season game. What records will be set? http://wp.me/pBOlN-2U
  •  “TexasGrand : Make your own Prickly Pear Cactus Jelly. http://wp.me/pBOlN-2Q” Once you follow all the links you’ll find your self on one of my favorite blogs “ Screwed Up Texan” in the recipes section, but be sure and take a look at the rest of her blog, its good Texas reading.

And now for the non–tweet  portion of the post,  I’d like to share a few upcoming events in Texas that make me wish I had a tank full of gas and a pocket full of money.

  • Texas State Fair : September 25-October 18 (highlights for me aren’t the rides, the cook offs or even the music, –yes I really said that- for me its the livestock) I love to see all the beautiful cattle, horses and whatever else they happen to be showing at any given time. My newest addition to my “animals I’d love to have a couple of “ list is the Miniature Zebu Cattle , if  you’re interested here's a link to a Texas farm that raises them.  Buffalo Hill Exotics
  • Now this one is where the music comes in : The Butthole Surfers (formed in San Antonio in 1981) are coming to Houston on September 24 at the House of Blues. If you’re interested in tickets here’s the link to Ticketmaster.  It’s a kick off show for their reunion tour this fall. All of them will be there, Gibby Haynes, Jeff Pinkus, King Coffey, Paul Leary and Teresa Taylor. Its a show I would give just about anything to go and see.  So lets take a look at what I’m gonna miss.

Wow … Where is my mind?

With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trip and spin it, yeah
Your head'll collapse
If there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself
Where is my mind
Where is my mind
Where is my mind

These are a few of the lyrics to one of my favorite songs by the Pixies, and that’s exactly how I’ve been feeling lately. I’ve spent so much time doing a whole lot of nothing, that I feel like my head is going to collapse. Well I think I might be back, not a 100% sure just yet, but the cool morning air has me feeling a little more like my old normal self.  I’ve decided to shake all the cobwebs out of my head and off my ass and join the living again. So I’ll try and keep up with this blog a little better. For now take a minute and enjoy my favorite song by the Pixies while I go wash some dishes.  And never forget reality sucks worse when your hands are in dishwater but less when they’re holding someone else's.

Texas makes me so Proud

Saturday, August 8

I just read this article on the Mother Nature Network Site. Due to the fact that helping the homeless and going green are two of my favorite causes at this time in my life. I have to say that this article really makes me super proud of Texas. It just goes to show that when Texans decide to do things they love to do them in a big way. Please take the time to follow the link and read the whole story, its well worth the time.

Texas Punk History - Uncalled 4

Thursday, July 2

I was reading on some sites today about punk history in Texas and I found an interesting bit of news that really was news to me. I was looking over all the bands listed on Discography of Texas Punk 1977-1983 from collector scum.com and found Uncalled 4 and they were listed at being from Waco, seeing as how I leave so close to Waco and honestly couldn’t imagine a punk band from Waco during those years I decided to give it a little more research. I found a few interesting things that I’d like to share with you:

  • First - they’re not really from Waco ( that was apparently a hoax the band perpetrated because they thought it “was cooler to be from Waco than Austin.” Imagine that… sure wouldn’t be that way today. You can read the whole story about the hoax on BreakMyFace.com _ Uncalled 4
  • Second I found a couple of Mp3's of their song “cotton fields” and "grind her up" so give them a listen. Its a nice piece of Texas punk history.

Today in Texas history – In 1835 -Mexican Army Capt. Antonio Tenorio surrenders the Anahuac garrison after spotting an advance by troops under the command of William B. Travis. Upcoming 4th of July Activities in Texas

Power of Houston Fireworks White and Blue

Image by The Rocketeer via Flickr

I love the July 4th activities probably because I grew up in Houston and always attended “freedom fest”. They have the best fireworks display I’ve ever seen and you can’t beat all the people, activities for kids and the musical talent that plays on the 4 stages they set up every year. It is by far my favorite place to be on the 4th of July. My most memorable was the year I saw John Lee Hooker. It was so magical to sit on the grass lawn only about 50 feet from the stage and sing with such a legend in the blues music industry. This year they have a local Texas boy -Clay Walker on the main stage.

Other memorable July 4th celebrations that come to mind :

  • The year I was only 14. My best-friend and her mom took me to my first Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic, I can’t describe how awesome that was, but if you’ve never been you must go at least once in your life. It just can’t be this year, he’s not in Texas, his concert is in Indiana at the Coveleski Stadium.
  • Fireworks at South Padre Island, The fireworks are shot from a barge on the Laguna Madre Bay and they just always seem so much more spectacular over the water.
  • The road trip my daughter and I made a few years back. It took all day to get to San Antonio, we actually got there so late that the fire works had already started and we pulled over on the side of the road to watch the show. The things we did on the road trip were what made that day. It included a stop to visit the San Marcos River, The Snake Farm, a drive thru the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch and a quick visit to the Children on the Tracks Site, which is why we were late to see the fireworks.

These are some of my favorite fourth memories, but there was also many year camping at area lakes, a few years of grilling and fireworks in the back yard, and many of swimming to avoid the Texas heat. My personal preference would always include live music and open air entertainment if I was the only one to consider. This year it’s going to be grilling in the back yard, a romp through the sprinkler and the local Brazos Nights Concert and Fireworks .

If you interested in other 4th of July events around Texas, you can visit the following sites they have tons of useful info and links to just about every place in Texas that post their events.

No matter what you and yours decide to do this fourth, please remember to be safe and enjoy yourself. Independence is one of the best reason we have to celebrate, so if you see a soldier or a veteran say “thank you” it’s their sacrifices that keep us celebrating our independence every year.

Spreading the wealth of information

Friday, May 29

Just wanted to share the interesting articles I’ve found so far in a few of our Texas magazines:

Newspaper articles that deserve your time, This Week in Texas History, 2 Game Alamodome Tickets on Sale,
and this is one for the history books if you ask me, Man Gets 45 Years for Infecting Partners with HIV, a very sobering read for all those people who privately think it can’t happen to me. It can and it still does. Remember just because you don’t hear about it everyday or constantly hear about those that die from this disease, doesn’t mean its gone away. Its still here and its still killing people. So have safe sex, everytime.

Now that I bored you wilh my lecture, grab a glass of wine and take 5 minutes to see the Texas winecast.

The first installment of a new online video series called the GO TEXAN WineCast. The inaugural six episodes introduce the Texas wine industry and feature some of Texas distinctive grapes.

Just a quick reminder about this weekend.
